My Brutal Beast started during last year's Halloween movie binge. I was watching all four Jeepers Creepers movies (the last one was disappointing, honestly), but something about that creature stuck with me.
Not his appearance—Raven doesn't look anything like him—but his single-minded determination and obsession with his prey. I thought, "What if that intensity was directed at protecting someone instead?"
A Dark Beauty and the Beast
When I was shaping this story, I realized my outline reminded me of Beauty and the Beast. Cassandra gets whisked away to the castle of a very rich gargoyle who won't let her go. She definitely has some family drama, and Raven does gift her his library.
But this isn't your childhood fairytale.
It's about finding comfort in what should terrify you. About stepping away from the familiar—which for Cassandra is actually what puts her in danger—and embracing the unknown.
When she does that, she's not just liberated. She finds the love she's been searching for.
Meet Raven
Raven was created long ago to watch over humans and protect them from dark creatures. And he's done a good job of that.
But over time, his own soul has become corrupt. He can be brutal, cold, and terribly violent. Because of that, he opts to stay away from humans, except for a trusted few, and prefers to keep to his quiet life in his remote castle.
But one day he's pulled to something, and the moment he sees Cassandra, he knows he's found his mate.
There's so much he doesn't understand about humans—their illnesses, their emotions, their decisions—but for her? He's willing to try. He's willing to do anything if it means he can have her.
